    C1 Front Suspension

    Yep, me again
I'm about to order all new front suspension rebuild parts for my 61. About all suppliers have similar kits. Any preference who to order from . CC, Dr. Rebuild, Kanter,.. same product?
    Also
I'm replacing the upper shaft threaded inserts on the shock towers. Anything I should know? Appears I can remove the old ones using a cutoff wheel and weld the new ones back into place without any problems. Any alignment concerns I should be aware of?

    Thanks

During disaassebly, I noticed the upper inner shaft was only finger tight. According to st12 this should be a "tight" fit. Will replacing the shaft and insert bushings resolve this issue?

The kits are probably all the same. I'd go with cheapest price. Kanter's prices are supposed to be the cheapest.

The upper inner shaft is supposed to be very difficult to replace. It is supposed to be more than finger tight. Don't know how tight. Maybe the ST12 has a torque value for replacement. But certainly tight enough so it doesn't move. Are you sure you want to replace the shaft? Sometimes if you switch bushings around it'll tighten up on the A-arm. It only comes out and goes in from one direction. I don't know how you can cut the shaft off with a cutoff wheel unless ther body is off the car. You're supposed to have a kent Moore tool to get the shaft off, but double nutting or a pipe wrench will work. There have been reports that the replacement shafts don't fit. If the openeings for the shaft in your shock tower is enlarged, you can weld the shaft in. Don't know much about that. I also believe that there's a kit with thin nuts that jam the shaft in the shock tower.

The pivot points are metal to metal. The way these suspensions wear is usually that 1 or 2 points take all the wear. You might find that not all the points need replacing.

Thanks for the info. I'll be replacing the shock tower inserts on one tower only since the other has been replaced at an earlier time. One upper control arm is bad and the other is boarder line. ANYONE out there have 2 UPPER CONTROL ARMS 4 SALE? lol.
I'll be fingering through the driveline this evening.
          Thanks for your help.

Leon, look on EBay for a pair of these. Recently listed. Look at the photo. There's thin jam nuts on this pair. Do not believe that is original. Believe those jam nuts are to solve the problem you describe.
