    L79 Intake Manifold

I've been looking for an L79 intake maniold for a while to complete my engine restoration. I understand the correct manifold has PN "3890490" stamped behind where the carb mounts. I bought (I think!!!) the correct manifold @ the Goodguys swap meet in Hershey last week. The manifold is identical to every one I've ever seen - with one exception. The manifold I bought has the same part number, but is missing the middle "0". It's stamped with "389" - then a blank space (clearly no number at all)- and the "490". The "0" is simply missing and there is no indication that this number has been ground off - it's just not there. Any thoughts???
    Thanks!!!

    Tom:

If it has the Winters' Foundry casting logo, then it is probably the real McCoy. Sometimes it is simply a casting flaw that causes some characters to be missing or incomplete. You say that the number is STAMPED, you probably mean that it is cast.

      Joe,

Thanks for the response. Yes, it has the Winter's Foundry casting logo, and the numbers are cast (not stamped). It's just missing the middle "0". Additionally, there is a letter cast below the "389" - the letter "M".???

        Re: L79 Intake Manifold

It's not uncommon for cast mold inserts to wind up delivering 'poor fill' characteristics with some numbers/letters oblitherated. I've got an early '4911 water pump where the first '1' digit is virtually missing and there's no sign of external tampering. Also, I've seen similar fill 'hiccups' on many other cast pieces...

As far as the 'M' goes, foundries used other characters/marks for source identification (What line was it cast on? What mold produced a specfic part?). It's not a big deal...

It is part of "G M", which should appear just below the casting number. Another casting flaw.........the "G" is missing.

I have another variation on the casting flaw theme in my basement.
