Removing coating from the bottom of a '66

I've recently purchased a 29,000 mile 1966 roadster, it is a very early car (1649) with beautiful original paint and interior. Unfortunately, it won't be much of a Bow Tie candidate as the engine and chassis portions have been painted/coated. The chassis has been entirely covered with a rust protective coating that is going to have to be removed. I've cleaned much of it off of the front and the bottom of the foot/seat wells. My question is how much of the underside of the rear stowage areas, if any, have black factory paint? Noland Adams book clearly shows white glass showing on the bottom of the foot wells and seat wells along with the bottom of the stowage areas. I've always believed that the sides and rear of the stowage area are painted black from the factory.

    Tom,
There is lots of helpful discussion on this in the archives. It is a nasty job but can be done with a lot of patience, and most likely it will be detectable when complete. The biggest problem will be the frame or anything else that had asphaltic paint applied to it. The solvent you use to remove the undercoating most likely will remove the asphaltic paint too. Many of the black painted parts like control arms, suspension pieces etc. were painted/dipped with emamel type paint will clean up pretty well. In many cases the undercoating will have preserved the underlying paint finish and will look great after the undercoating is removed. Speaking from experience it's a tough job but well worth the effort. Good Luck
