Re: lacquer
My home painted in 1991 lacquer painted Donnybrooke Green 1970 is holding up pretty well. Don't have the crazing that I had with the original paint after 3 years. Have more rock chips from being driven than I would like. But it is a driver and always has been since new, like 165k miles.- Top

Striped and painted my 62 in 1975. Still looks good from 10 feet. All panels needed repair .Has some cracking on the upper pnls. Sides still look great...Painted it 75 Corvette maroon with clear in my garage.Next time it will be its original Black.Has almost no chipping. Waxed it maybe 4 times in 25 years.- Top

Re: lacquer
What started me on this query is: The current owner of my old 57 that I did a body off and also painted in PPG lacquer, called me last night. Painted Black/silver coves. I sold the car 8 years ago, before getting it judged. Big mistake. He now has 2 top flights and is taking it to Bloomington for the Gold. He said the paint and body are still perfect. P.M.O. The last time out they dinged him because the door jambs were too shiny. This paint job has no clear. At least not from me. I repaired at least 2000 cracks in this car's exterior. A ton of work. I am proud but sad for my mistake of selling. I, like so many, were afraid of driving it. I restored it and he takes the kudos. wah! friggin wah! Have a nice day. Dick Gutman- Top

Re: lacquer
Dick
this doesn't directly answer yor question so i apologize in advance, but when i dropped off my car for a repaint back in the fall i discussed with the painter what type of paint i should go with. it had lacquer on it at the time that was approx 15yo and overall in pretty good condition except for a few small spots. the original idea was to just touch up the bad spots.
i eventually decided to go with a full repaint and my painter strongly suggested going to BC/CC since mine is a driver car and i wasn't worried about losing points in NCRS judging which i don't do.
he says the BC/CC is more durible and also easier to spot fix and blend in for future chip or scratch repairs compared to lacquer.
he only recommends lacquer anymore if it's a true trailer queen show car.
others may disagree with him but based on his recommendation is why i went with the BC/CC on mine.
getting the PPG BC/CC in a correct color match was not easy but that's another story that i know you are already familiar with. in that aspect, the lacquer would have been much easier.
oh.........one more factor i took into consideration. he said a lacquer paint job would be a few thousand $$'s more because the paint was more expensive and mostly because of the extra labor involved with lacquer for all the time needed with even more wetsanding than he already had to do on the BC/CC paint and the extra rubbing out of the paint.
i think for a driver car BC/CC is a better bet but for a showcar the lacquer is the way to go.- Top
