    C1 valve stem

Went thru the archives and I could not find any info on C1 stems.

I believe they might be 1 3/8" since that is what came off the car and the correct wheels I bought for it. But not sure. They were Schraeder TR415

There is nothing in the JGM.

I checked Corvette Central and they say I should use long stems for full wheel covers and short for dish but I have no idea if that is correct or just what fits well. I talked to them and they sell a short one for large hole but not sure what length.

any help out there on proper length and where to get them? I have gone thru a lot of the online sources with little success.

    thanks

    Chris -

CC sent me their "long" valve stems eight years ago for my original-rims '57, and they were too large in diameter to fit through the holes in the wheel covers.

        John,

I also bought from CC last year and had the same problem. I would think they would get it right after 7 years. Also would like to know what you are using since I'm about ready to mount the new Diamondback radials on my '58 and would like to put in correct or functional stems.

Still trying to figure out correct length but NAPA and Carquest can get large hole stems. They sell at least one about 1 1/4" long.

I ended up installing steel valve stems, to stop rotation of the wheel covers that started when I switched from "judging" bias-ply tires to radials.

                John,

I've monitored a number of posts on steel valve stems. What did you use? I have a choice of NAPA, Car Quest and a regional supplier called VIP. As posted earlier, I am about ready to mount my new radials and hope to buy the correct stems that allow my wheel covers to fit. The CC ones don't fit the bill. Thanks!

What type of rotation did you experience? I'm getting ready to mount my BFG Silvertown Radials as soon as the paint dries on the wheels.

                    Re: C1 valve stem

The spinner hubcaps on my '59 would rotate during a drive and eventually bend the stock valve stems and pinch them underneath the hubcaps. I followed John's advice and had metal valve stems installed to prevent the rotation. I understand that my spinner hubcaps are reproductions and don't have the proper size nubs to hold the hubcap tight enough to the wheel. Regards, - Kevin

                      David -

I don't recall the brand of the steel valve stems - the local custom wheel shop installed them for me back in '96. Had original rims and wheel covers on the '57, and after mounting the radials, got tired of seeing the rubber valve stems bent over at a 45* angle by the wheel covers; the steel valve stems cured the problem permanently.

I think I have located a source locally for the stems. Thanks for the advice on using steel.
