    1962 Leaking Tower Clamps

I am working to stop the leaks on my upper radiator hose. I understand that I need to use a sealer and I would appreciate specific recommendations for the sealer.

    Thanks

    John

John, Would like to recommend, however,...

...have never had a leak with a tower clamp, and have never used any kind of sealer. Doubt St Louis did either. We must be missing something here. Best, Dennis

The method I use is to:
      1) clean both mating surfaces,
      2) swab the inside couple of inches of the radiator hose with non-hardening Permatex gasket sealer,
      3) mate the two surfaces together,
      4) apply and tighten the hose clamp,
      5) allow sufficient time for the sealer to set up,
      6) go forth leak free.
This method has worked for both ends of the hose.

Or you could try installing the tower clamp on the hose loosely and securing the hose with a worm drive clamp after a couple of heat cycles remove the worm drive clamp and move the tower clamp into place and tighten. Good luck. I don't like using a sealer as removing can be a Bitch.

John, with Wittek-style tower clamps or screw-on band clamps, the band portion of the clamp must be held tight to the hose opposite the tightening mechanism to insure that it gets installed flat to the hose without mis-alignment. I've also found that with the Wittek-style clamps, the four bent over tabs on either side of the screw tower tend to expand as you tighten the clamp. A tap on each of the tabs with a punch will ensure that the clamps remain tight. I've never used sealant of any kind on a coolant hose and very rarely ever have a leak. I've always thought the Wittek-style clamp was an unusual contraption for what it is supposed to accomplish. But for originality, I would normally use Ideal-brand screw-on band clamps. Good Luck.
