    66 Voltage Regulator/Alternator

I replaced my alternator with an after market 80 amp model. After about 150 miles my voltage regulator stuck and I would get +40 amps with increased RPM. I would get 0 amps at idle. Tapped the regulator a bit and it would return to normal operation but only for a short time. This regulator I suspect is sthe orignal but I can't swear to it. I know it has been in there for +30 years because that is how long I have had tis car. I know the alternator is higher in amps than stock. NAPA has a regulator #VR142SB for a 66 that is rated for a 63 amp alternator. Question is a high output alternator related to regulator failure and will this NAPA 63 amp regulator be OK with an 80amp alternator.

    Dennis:

I would try cleaning the contact points inside. They might be dirty, or sticking.

Would I use an electrical contact cleaner like available at Radio Shack?

        Dennis:

Remove the cover and examine the points first. You may have to use a small points file to remove any pitting. After you do that, then use the contact cleaner to remove any residue. Cleaning fluid (carbon tetrachloride) also works well.

Also use some fine sandpaper between the contacts along with the electronic spray cleaner. (Blow any extra cleaning liquid off the coils.)
