    2 C2 questions

    All,

I hope you all can help with a couple of questions regarding my 66.

    1. A prior owner bead blasted the heater box giving it a dull look, or light grey look. I was told that I could hit it with a clear gloss to restore the dark grey look. Any thoughts on that situation?

    2. Regarding the door jamb, I know the latch is unpainted as well as the alignment wedge, was everything else painted body color? Can someone post a picture for a visual learner?

    Thanks in advance,
    Rob 39975

    Robbie,

Here's a shot of my Dec 1966 tire tub. I believe it's very close to the appearance of the heater box. I'd use a 3M rubbing compound like "Perfect It" I believe its called. I've used it before while colorsanding with great results, of course you'll need a wheel or hand polishing will take a long while. I know, because this is how I polished my plastic, speed-warning, gauge lenses!

My 67 blue/white int. car is sprayed blue over complete sills and jam area including hinges and hinge bolts. The break in color starts on the center of pinch weld cap and continues down to side of white, inner quarter panel trim. The two pinch weld cap screws are sprayed blue, remember mine is a coupe, and conv. might differ with this process.

Another thing to keep in mind re the door strike is that they masked the strike with a cover and shot the jamb from the side shooting toward the center of the car. Therefore - it is very common in original cars to have little of no exterior paint in evidence on the interior interior side of the jamb just aft of the strike. In my original car - that area has primer showing with little exterior color. Hope I explained this so you get the picture. If not - let me know and I will email a picture to you email address.

Thanks Pete and Justin, good information. Pete your explanation was perfectly clear of the latch paint process. I was trying to find out if there was anything, like a screw or something, that didn't get body color in that area.

Justin, I'll try the 3M product and see how it goes. Thanks for the tip.

          Re: 2 C2 questions

Rob - Re the screw question - known originals sometimes have the lower pinchwelt screw unpainted while the top one was hit with paint. I assume the reason was the cap was fastened with just one screw has it came down the paint line and the second was added after.

            Pete,

Thanks. I thought there was one that wasn't painted. Now all I need to do is figure out which one is the pinchwelt screw.

              coupe pinch weld screws

              Robbie,

Here's a shot of my #450 interior and the pinch cap. BOTH screws are painted blue from the factory on my car. I don't know about others, but why would GM only shoot color on one of the screws. It seems the purpose is to hold the inner quarter panel flush at top, wouldn't both be tightened and in place?
