To drill or not to drill? a wheel

I bought 5 wheels for my 62 which all appear correct except one has the small valve hole. It is dated 10/65. Am I correct that this wheel is a service wheel and never used on a vette? It is welded/no dogbones and the SPO sticker was damaged so I could not read the part number. It does not have safety humps.

Just want to make sure before I drill a larger valve hole into it.

Chris I can't help ID the wheel, but if it looks identical to the other four, I would enlarge the valve stem hole to match the others and use it.

Depending on how much material you need to remove, you might be better off using a rotary file in your drill motor. Sometimes when I try to enlarge a hole thru a thin piece of metal with a drill bit, I get a hole that isn't round but more triangular shaped and oversized.

It's best to go under size and follow up with a reamer, but not everyone has the right size for every application.

    congrats on your find.

      Chris--
What do you mean by the "safety humps"? The nubs for hubcap retention? THe nubs for wheelcover retention? The indented ring for making it more difficult for the tire bead to break loose? Thanks,
      Mike Ernst

Sorry, safety bead. Helps keep the tire on the rim during low air conditions. raised area around the entire rim on both inner and outer beads.

Per the drawing and the parts this later Service wheel has a smaller center hole that others have said needs grinding oversize. I find on my car there is no interference on rear drums and nice snug fit on front. Anybody know the front hub diameter on the spindle assembly? I need to pick up some calipers.

you can make an elcheapo pair of calipers

using some sheet metal (or cardboard,) strips, a wingnut and a bolt to act as the pivot point.

A man's got do what a mans gotta do....until he gets to the tool store that is.
