    63 FI Float

    Hello All
Question for all you FI experts. My float on my 63 fuel unit is toast. Do any of you know if they are the same float for all years 57-65. I have access to a float of a solid axle but I don't know if they are the same. Inspecting the pump assembly they appear to almost identicle. The question of the week are floats interchangable? Thanks in advance

    Yes

I am not an expert, and I do not even play one on TV. But I will try to answer your question anyway.

I've seen two float designs used in Rochester FI fuel meters. They look distinctly different. The first float design had a large opening between the "arms" for the Coasting Shut-off mechanism used in early 1957 4360 units. The second float design was installed in all 1958 and later units with a die cast fuel bowl.

I am curious. What turns a soldered brass float into "toast"?

      Re: 63 FI Float

if the float has gasoline in it just put in a a coffee can with water and boil it. this will boil out the gasoline and show you where the hole is so you can solder it closed. DO NOT use your wifes pots or pans for this and DO NOT do it on the kitchen stove because the smell of gasoline will never come out. do not ask me how i know this.

Thanks for your replies. I have access to early float so I am on it. As for the amount of solder when we were draining the float we were pushing on one side (try to oil can) the float. This cracked it right across . My repair man treated it like a radiator and applied a ton of solder. So I am off to get my replacement float and then the regionals in 8 days. On less thing to panic about. Ie: getting there is a good thing.
