If it's for a 'driver' application that you want a trustworthy jack, today's 'bottle jacks' (any auto parts store) work pretty darn well, take up very little space and aren't very expensive....

Here's what I bought for my '62. Norco model 82002B. Made in the USA. Around $20. About the same size as the original. Fits nicely in the spare tire well, as if it were made for it.

If you painted it black, it'd look very much like the original C1 jack. Norco has/had some relationship with AUSCO who made the original C1 jack. Hmmm.

Hi Chris. I also need a jack for my '59 but I didn't have luck with that link. Could you check it please. Thank you. Pat G.

The link only gets you to Norco. Then, on the left, click onto "Product Information." When that comes up, click onto "Scissors Jack."

            Also see:

They say that they're in business to make the AUSCO jacks. Look at their SJ2 and SJ1.5.

Why do the original C1 jacks go for way more on Ebay than the reproductions from Corvette Central, etc.? Is it easy to tell them apart? If so, how?

The thief who took my original 55 jack

musta wished he hadn't taken the risk. My Dad used that jack for everything for 20 years, it was the most worn-out jack I have ever seen of any type. Still worked, but so wobbly I had decided to never use it, just restore it cosmetically and leave it in the trunk. It disappeared from the storage carton while the car was being painted in '88. I have been very happy with the repro I got as a replacement, very accurate and works well, although I have only used it a couple times.

                  Loren,
The current reproduction jacks are pretty good, but are still easy to tell from the originals. The new jacks have rivets that look just perfect, the originals have rivets that look like they were installed by a blacksmith, with a hammer and anvil!

                    Re: c1 car jacks

Other than the rivets, how does gthe rest of the jack look compared to the original?

Can the repro jack be reworked to look more original? Reason I ask is that pounding and leaving hammer marks in rivets sounds right up my alley. I can do that.

                      Re: c1 car jacks

Thanks, John. Corvette Central sells an "exact reproduction" jack for just a tad over $200; the originals are going for three to four times that on Ebay. I was wondering whether the point loss would be worth the big difference in price.

My feeling is that it is not worth the difference in price. There are a lot of points that you can get for less than $100 per point, but to the truly anal person, nothing but perfection will do! I don't think that you could ever make the rivets look like the originals, but the rest of the jack looks pretty good.
I would doubt that there are many judges that would not be able to tell the difference, but you never know.
