Question for Joe Lucia on some GM parts

Hi Joe - sorry this is off topic for Corvettes but thought you may be able to help on supercession of a few parts for my 97 Chevy 2500 Pickup. I received the following response from gmpartsdirect.com.....the first part listed is a shock absorber, the second two are for the lenses for the headlights (they clouded up from sun). Do you know if there are any supercessions? Thx!....Craig

    Part Number 22064837

Currently the part number listed above is not available from GM at this time, as it has been discontinued by GM. We will have to remove this part from your order. Please let us know if you want the balance of the parts on your order.

    Part Number 16515828 and 16515827

Currently the part numbers listed above are not available from GM at this time as GM is out of stock and the part is on national backorder. We will have to remove this part from your order. Please let us know if you want the balance of the parts on your order.

If we do not receive a reply from you within 3 business days, the part will be removed and the remaining part will be shipped.

    Thank you, GMPartsDirect.com

    Craig-----

I show that GM #22064837 was superceded by GM #22064836. However, I don't show any availability on the 22064836, either. So, I don't know what's going on. It's possible that this is a very recent thing and the system hasn't "sorted things out yet". Neither the 22064837 or the 22064836 are Delco system parts, so you can't get them that way. Two options: first, there are likely some of the 22064837 in dealer inventory and your local dealer might be able to locate and obtain them for you. Of course, this won't be at GMDirect prices. Second, there are Delco parts system shocks available for your application. They might not be exactly the same as the GM, though

I show the 16515827 and 16515828 headlamp assemblies to be still available. However, if GMPartsDirect says that they are on national backorder, that's probably the case; I have no way of confirming that, but I expect they are correct. Here's why: Guide Corporation, a GM spin-off parts maker went out of business. I'll bet a "dollar to a donut" that Guide made these lenses. So, now GM has to find another manufacturing source, transfer tooling, etc. In the interim, the lenses will be on "national backorder". If a new manufacturer doesn't "pan out", then the "discontinued" sign will go up at some point in the future. Once again, there are quite a few of these things out there in dealer inventory, so your local dealer will be able to locate and obtain them for you. However, also once again, not a GMDirect prices.

Re: Question for Joe Lucia on some GM parts

Thanks Joe - on the headlights.....these were the lens assemblies......they also offered a more expensive option that includes the housing and mounting behind the lens.....( I will have to dig that number up from my notes). The list on the lenses I tried to order was about $140 each, the complete assemblies on each side listed around $300 each, but GMpartsdirect was about $162 each. Maybe I can still get the complete asm through them....they were probably ordered less. This is a "new" pickup I purchased in april to replace my old 81....and it is really clean other than it has a few things such as cloudy plastic lenses in the headlights. On the shocks, I just want a good set of delcos for replacment........Thx!.....Craig

Permatex sells a kit for cleaning up the lenses.

Thx Clem and Brian - I assumed it was clouding through the complete plastic itself vs surface clouding.....maybe not! Our sun is a killer here in Tucson....thx for the tip......Craig

Re: Question for Joe Lucia on some GM parts

Hi Joe - I found out that P/N 15034929 and 15034930 (complete assemblies vs lens only) are also on national backorder per gmpartsdirect.com. However, my local dealership O'Rielly Chevrolet had the LH lens only, and the RH complete asm in stock and cut me 25% off list....sort of splitting the difference between GMpartsdirect and list.

I may try Clem and Brian's idea too, but I am glad to get the parts in case that doesn't work or a future broken lens.

Do you know what Delco parts system shock absorbers would apply for my 97 2500 series extended cab PU with a 7.4L engine? Maybe there is a Delco jobber in town that can look this up independant of the GM parts system.....thx!.....Craig

Re: Question for Joe Lucia on some GM parts

                Craig,

FYI, I used the Edelbrock IAS shocks on my 1994 K1500 ext cab Chev pickup and loved them. They're better than stock ones, and better than the Sensatracks (?) the previous owner put on that truck. I also have since installed them on the 70 Cutlass with GREAT results.

                http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_..._chart-2.shtml

Usually the "upgrade" shock from GM for their trucks is a Bilstein (eg for use with Z71 or towing package), so I'd go look up those if I were you. They're likely better and cheaper than a Delco if you sort of want to stay with factory specs. But, I like the Edelbrocks.

Follow the instructions for the shock for your truck.

Re: Question for Joe Lucia on some GM parts

Thx Doc! One set of shocks are coming already from gmpartsdirect.com....I can't remember if the ones that were not available were fronts or rears. I guess there is no issue with mix/match front/rear with other brands, especially on a truck. Seems if I recall the ones that were still in show were only about $30 each...so not a big deal if I didn't use and matched a set of Edelbrocks or Bilsteins. Craig

Re: Question for Joe Lucia on some GM parts

Patrick - I found the Bilsteins at Autozone, and at eShocks.com. On the Edelbrocks, found them at eShocks.com also, nubmer ED3312 and ED3412. However, on the Edelbrock link you sent, the 88-98 C2500 2WD is not listed, just 4WD with different shock numbers. But the listing at eShocks may be right. Bilstein offers HD ride and comfort ride, I am guessing the HD ride may be like the Edelbrock shocks. Seems the going price is $60 for the Bilsteins in HD, $50 for the comfort ride, and the Edelbrocks are $70 per shock.....thx for the tips.....Craig
