    C 1 Wipers

Just finished the wiper system installation on my '58. It works great. Have both speeds, but they don't shut off. Have I got the motor wire connected incorrectly?
The cable assembly is NOS. Thanks for your assistance.

Unhook the cable and see if it works the way it should without the cable. If it still doesn't work right it may be the oreintation of the activating cover to the points. If the cover was off the motor it must go back on with a slot that activates the points in the proper position.

It's most likely your cable adjustment--if the sheath is improperly located (ends too close to the motor) your cable can't pull the switch back far enough to shut it off.

        Larry,

The wipers move with or without the cable once I turn on the key. I tried adjusting the cable so it pulls the sliding plastic it attaches to further toward the driver's side and it pushed the blades down below the chrome. I imagine if I adjusted the other way, it would have the blades clean higher on the windshield? I can turn the knob and speed up and slow the blades, but not shut them off. The motor was restored by the best in the business, so I'm sure it's not the motor mechanism.

If the plastic piece is placed in the correct position and it still doesn't shut off, it may be the way the point levers under the cover are adjusted or bent. There are three bendable levers about 1/4" wide and 1 1/2" long with points on the ends. These levers may have bent or adjusted improperly after sitting idle for years. They control all functions of the wiper motor (including on/off, slow and fast speeds). Adjustment is very critical and VERY touchy. It would take too much space here to describe how to do it.... but as the plastic piece is slid across the top, different points are contacted at different intervals causing slow, then fast speeds. When you turn it off, the points then contact differently to trip a lever on the reverse side to engage a mechanism to provide for the "park" feature. If the motor turns on but will not turn off....I'd suspect the points!

The position of the blades is related to where they were when pressed onto the transmissions. I would take the blades off and with the white plastic all the way to the drivers side it should cycle to home position. Install the blades after the motor stops in home position. If it won't stop I would still check the motor.

              Larry,

That makes sense. I took the cable off and gently moved the slide all the way towards the driver's side and the blades bottomed out below the chrome and stopped. I think it's in the cable length. I hopes it's not the points. I'll try your recommendation and then adopt Plan B. I'll be back and let everyone know what happened. It will be tomorrow before I can get back at it.

Thanks Mike! I think that's the problem. Will tackle it tomorrow.

Thanks Brad! As stated to others who have responded, I think it's in the cable adjustment. Sure appreciate all the assistance I have received from this Board over the last few years. I'll post an update when I get it working or get back for more suggestions.
