California Title Search

Does anyone know of the best way to do a California title search? My '72 LT-1 came from California and I would like to track down as much history and previous ownership as possible. Most sites seem to direct you to CarFax which is not what I want. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Good Luck - California was one of the

first to start "purging" their records. No one knows if somewhere a "magic
copy" is being kept, but the only thing you are going to get now from CA if you give them your VIN is a confirmation that there is NOT CURRENTLY a Corvette registered in California with your car's VIN - at least that's what I hope you get - if it comes back as Charlie______, Van Nuys, CA. THEN you've got trouble.

The data may not be purged, you just can't get to it unless you're a manufacturer doing a recall, or a police agency, etc. I used to work for a company that bought vehicle registration info from the states - California was the first state to restrict who they would sell to and for what purpose. Unless you can track your vehicle's history back owner by owner, you're not going to find much, no matter what state is involved. I guess we can thank all the stalkers and telemarketers out there that caused the privacy laws to be enacted.
