Started doing some research on 78 four-speeds and believe three 4 speeds were available in 78-79 depending on engine ordered. If the buyer ordered L48, they got the economy Muncie MM4 or the muncie version of M20 with a 2.85:1 ratio. L48s couldn't get the the heavy-duty M21 transmission.
If the buyer order L82 but with base M20 four-speed, they got the B/W RPO M20 with a 2.64:1 ratio. But if the L82 was ordered with M21, than RPO M21 got installed with the B/W 2.43:1 ratio transmission. The 2.64:1 tranny was coded with HS while the 2.43:1 tranny was coded with HW.
I used Colvin to arrive at much of this but the challenge is finding a 78 L82 with base 4-speed who can confirm the RPO used to identify transmisson type. I believe this is the "mystery" four-speed for 78-79. Curious what you might have.
It was the B/W wide ratio four-speed transmission that was the last to evolve out of Corvette lineage in 1981. The M21 was last available in 79.
