    Distributor Caps

Can someone explain the difference between a D308 cap and a D311.
    Thanks Mike

If you mean D-310. the difference is in the height of the towers (shorter in the D-310) I have no D-311 reference.

Bill, Check this link out to Ebay for a D311 cap.

Cap looks the same as a 310

Towers are too high for a D-310, looks more like a D-308, and I was not able to discern the seven-digit part number from the picture. I see an Olds guy bought it, and they used the D-310 generally, The only application I can find for the D-311 is Cadillac with 3X2 bbl and as I recall, they had to relocate the points and the window to make them accessable with the Cad 3X2 setup. You would have to check the position of the points window relative to the hold-down bolts carefully relartive to a D-308 or D-310 to find it that is the case.

A close look at the location of the window shows it is right next to the retainer screw meaning it will only allow the points to be adjusted if used on the matching distributer, IE-the Cadillac 3X2 bbl setup.

Yes, this little "foible" has probably fooled many a cap buyer. They see a D-311 and just assume that it's the same as the D-308. But it's not and it's obviously different externally if one is paying attention (like judges often are). The only one that "needs" a D-311 is the Cadillac 3X2 restorer. I'll bet there aren't too many of those.

                While we're on the subject...

I've been having an issue with shielding top on my '66 BB coupe shorting out the coil wire and killing the engine. Finnaly resorted to driving with the lid off. Will a shorter tower cap provide additional clearance for an L36 application?

                  Dan,
I think many C2 owners who drive their BB cars may have had the same problem. Insulating the lid will help. I wonder if anyone can point us in the direction of a correct repro cap that has the right length towers...i.e....not too tall.

The original BB top shield had a an opaque plastic insulator on the underside of it specifically to address that issue.

It would probably provide additional clearance, but that style cap was never originally used for a big block. The tower height of the current D-308 is the same as the D-308 used back in 1966.

                        Dist Cover Insulating Liner...

is listed as a separate item in the Long Island catalog at $2.50 if one is missing the factory original insulator.
