    c1 engine temp. /carb. backfiring

just got rebuilt 57 engine reinstalled and just put water in coolong system for now, I can only rely on car's temp, gauge for now it seems to read about 190 to 200 degrees (also I have proper I do put antifreeze in also what reason would make single wcfb back fire thru carb. when it firsr starts up thank you guys very much for all your great answers

Check the timing. Sounds like it's too far retarded. Retarded timing usually shows up as backfire through the carb and high idle coolant temps.

Or.....you may have put your distributor in 180 degrees off (if the backfiring is severe)

        Brad,
it isn.t severe it just happens when i first start car after been setting
do you know if 190 to 200 degrees is to hot or is this nothing to be concerned about plus it seems to idle at about 1100 rpms what about that thanks

I'd agree with Paul's earlier response then. If you can get your hands on a IR thermo-gun and aim it towards your thermostat housing, your readings would be much more accurate. C1's temp sending units and gauges can be off by at least as much as what you're reading. Rebuilt engines upon fresh start-up's are also known to run a little hot. I always run my engines inititally with out a thermostat just to make sure your getting good water flow throughout the engine. After you do this then advance your timing up to 4-6 degrees BTDC. After you get the temperature and backfiring under control, then you can focus on the carburetor. Has it been rebuilt as well? If so, make sure your throttle plates are closed at whatever idle speed you need to run and then adjust your mixture screws. Start at 1 1/2 turns out. I'm assuming you're running a Carter WCFB.

            Paul...

Idle speed should be set at 600 for 270/315 hp & 475 for 230.245.& 275 hp engines.
