    c1 aluminum dash insert replacement

    Hi,
Has anyone replaced the aluminum dash inset. I know how to remove it from the dash, however I don't know how to get the chrome trim off it. Also, does anyone have any tips on making it easy to re-install back in to the dash
    Thanks.. Susan

This is a very tedious task. The aluminum insert is held on withthe small ss moldings. On most cars these have a couple of small spot welds that need to be carefully ground off. Then comes the fun of getting everything back together. I have reassembled a couple of these and done nothing to retain the ss moldings. They are held in place when reinstalled in the dash. Some folks like to glue them, but it isn't essential.

Be VERY careful with the aluminum. It will bend if you look hard at it.

Well I just done this myself recently.Boy what a tedious job. I had to drill out/grind the crimps that hols the stainless on. then the old insert falls off.

then you set the new insert inplace and try and install the top and bottom stainless with out moving the inset around or scrathing it of denting it.Once I finally got it together it would not stay together with crimps so I had to use a 2 part expoxy to attach the stainless trims on from the rear (I Feel sorry for the guy who has restore this peice in another 40 years)

I would say you need alot of paitence to tackle the job.

I have done this job on my 60 by following an excellent article written by Joe Calgagno in the Summer 1994 issue of the NCRS Corvette Restorer magazine. It is a 4 page step by step article that I used to replace my dash insert. It turned out perfectly! Just take it slow and follow the steps. You can track down the magazine or the article from someone I am sure. Hope this helps.

              Susan ...

After cutting the weld spots, I used JB Weld to hold the ss moldings. Using rubber bands at both ends to hold everything together while the epoxy set made things livable.

                Hi Susan

Jerry is correct. I sent mine to corvette central and they did a great job. Something I did not have the patients with. As far as putting it back in. Mine was a &$$*%&()(*)&* But I got it in with help.

                Good luck.....John
