    C2 Exhaust sealing compound

The 63 AIM shows sealing compound to be used where the header pipe joins the exhaust pipe. Is this still a current practice, and is there a current version of this sealant?

A sealer was used for the forward-to-rear exhaust pipe slip joint connection from 1963 to, at least, 1974. The sealer was never available in SERVICE from GM and GM SERVICE procedures did not specify the use of any sealer. There are very few sealers that would sustain the high exhaust system temperatures present at this point. However, I've always used high temperature anti-sieze compound at this connection. This not only seals, but aids in future disassembly.

Thanks. I am using anti-seize in all the hard-to-get-apart places, so I'll use it on the exhaust joint also.

Note Joe specified hi-temperature anti-seize. Generally, that is copper colored.
I have found a company named Wurth makes an exhaust system sealant in a tube. I don't know where it might be available in a store, but Griot's Garage sells it.

          Steve,

The front pipe on 63 exhaust is different in that it slips over top the rear pipe, 64-67 is the opposite. This set up is sure to cause a exhaust leak without sealer.

Thanks. I noticed that position in the AIM drawing, but didn't really focus on it. The exhaust on my car is not original and the rear pipe slips over the front.

I've been using Permatex part no C133. The product description says service temp range is -60 to 1600.
