    Cleaning Gauge Cluster and Console

I have the cluster and console out of my 72 to fix the clock and stereo. They are in great shape but could use a little touch-up/cleaning. Searhed for prior threads on this but didn't have any luck (probably me). I'm thinking a q-tip and some isopropal alcohol or something. I'm sure there are better ideas. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Joe,

I personally wouldn't use alcohol. I would use a soft bristle toothbrush for the small areas and a paint brush for large areas and lightly scrub it with 303 Aerospace protectant or Lexol Vinylex. Wipe it down with a microfiber towl. Let it for a day or two. If you don't like the way it looks mist it with water and wipe it down again with a microfiber towl. I was considering painting the gauge cluster in my 67 but I used this method and I was very pleased with how new it looked again.

      Two comments here:

      (1) The gauge lens normally 'float' on rubber bumpers to get correct seal. Remember where each bumper was and be sure to get it back correctly.

      (2) Feel free to clean polish away on the clear lens components, but be VERY careful with handling the gauge faces. You're apt to find the white gradicule paint will smudge/smear VERY easily with any appreciable wiping especially if you use a chemical cleaning solvent. I suggest using only compressed air to blow off stray dust...

        Joe,

After reading Jack's reply I just want to add that I thought you were wanting to freshen up the exterior surfaces of the cluster. You do not want to use the method I suggested on the gauge faces themselves. Hope no harm has been done yet.

Thanks all and no harm done. I did use the Vinylex on the gauge plate but that's it. I did half of it first to compare and it made a big difference. A lot of built-up crud was removed and they look good. I had never used Vinylex but picked some up today and did the dashpads, door panels, and trim parts. Big difference. Thanks!

There are a few paint chips around the ashtray door and heater control. I am going to tape it off and give it a quick shot of some semi.
