    Sherwin Williams paint

My painter informed me yesterday that the shop owner just switched to Sherwin Williams paint products and said I may want to consider requesting another product (his preference was with the previous Dupont supplier). I'm looking at going with a bc/cc application and am wondering if I really should be concerned with any quality issues regarding Sherwin Williams products? Is there that much difference when compared to Dupont, PPG, House of Kolor etc. ?? I am staying with original color (Silverstone Silver), so I at least know that whomever I want needs to have that color available. Thanks in advance for any and all comments.

    Re: Sherwin Williams paint

Dave, I had my '69 coupe painted with Sherwin Williams Ultra 7000 base/clear back in 1999. The Cortez Silver is a very good match in both the tint and the size of metallica particles. I have had zero issues with the paint, it has held up wonderfully, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

That said, painters are a superstitious lot. Most guys get familiar and comfortable with a give maunfacturers line of products and don't want to learn the subtle differences in a different line of products. If the painter himself is not comfortable using the Sherwin products, then you could consider using the Dupont. Otherwise, I personally feel that there is very little difference in quality among top tier manufacturers. Face it, we baby the paint on our cars compared to what any daily driver has to deal with.

I agree with everything said in the previous post. I use Sherwin Williams products, and I feel it's good stuff. I'm always reluctant to use another brand, as there is a slight learning curve to do so.

        Re: Sherwin Williams paint

        Dave,
My 1967 was just painted with Sherwin-Williams paint. It took three months (130 hours of prep on a straight body) but all turned out very nicely. Obviously I cannot attest to the longevity of the product but I am very pleased with the job.

The painter previously used DuPont but switched about a year ago. I asked him about this and he said paint is paint, a rather simplistic reply. This is a franchise/chain shop and while I suspect his switch was motivated by mass-purchasing economics, I tend to believe that modern paint R&D/technology is very sophisticated and its hard to go wrong with the major suppliers. Sherwin-Williams is not a minor player in global markets.

I may have made a mistake but the job has a three-year warranty. And that gives me some comfort.

I don't post here often as my 1967 is not NCRS material. So I apologize for the wheels and BB/427 hood in the pic (taken when I picked up the car in late May).

Thanks to everyone for your input

I am more comfortable proceeding with SW paint now, thanks to the comments. I don't necessarily subscribe to the "paint is paint" theory, due to experience with different manufacturers in the construction industry, but it seems to apply here (major producers) for my use. Thanks to all again.

Don't forget the new easy carry and pour cans!

Thatta way if you hit a deer at what may be ahh ... more than the posted speed limit?, you can just "pop" the top, pour a pan full and roll on a fresh coat of silver

              Sorry, I couldn't resist Dave.

Hey...forgot about those! Don't they come pre-mixed with filler to handle the stress cracks?
