    62 ebay "unrestored survivor"

Check out ebay 4554253612. Not only are the words "matching numbers" being redefined every day, but so is the word "survivor." It's time for another contest--how many things can you find wrong with this survivor? (In addition to the CE motor?)
    I find:
Interesting paint and mount point for generator brace
    wrong generator
    wrong water pump
right ex. manifold has casting slag ground off--it's a GM replacement
"original" 340 intake is painted orange
left valve cover has casting flaw
    interesting air cleaner application
rubber fuel line feeding into the wrong spot on the carb for it to be original
    a 340 that's non-posi?
rocker moldings have no attaching bolts on bottom
carpet doesn't match carpet on doors
seats don't have original dip--they're recovered
    cherry bomb mufflers
    entire underbody painted
    creative transmission mount
    jack is 53=61
back window on soft top is stitched
    has original chrome headlight bezels!!!!
    kick panel has speaker mounted
    missing radio bezels
    340 with vacuum advance
    antenna base is incorrect
no jacking instructions on tire board
Looks to me like spare is probably 14"
back side of kick panel windlace looks like it started life fawn beige
front motor mount and clutch inspection cover are painted black
    heater hoses are red

Kinda makes you wonder about the description on the rest of the car "undamaged, etc." doesn't it?

It looks to me like it's a survivor--it has survived (and still exists to this day) in spite of some misguided owners/restorers over the years.

What else can you find wrong with it?

So Mike, why not post these questions to the seller and see what kind of responses you get?

My list was only about half that long (and I thought I was getting good at this!), but I was bemused by the use of 'survivor' to describe this car. I was going to ask the seller about this claim but wimped out- we're all big boys and girls, and anyone who doesn't do their homework on a mid-5-figure purchase is asking for trouble, no?

Mike - I thought that would get your attention. Wouldn't it be easier to find out what's right with this puppy. To add a little to your assessment:

Not only wrong generator, but no ID tag
Missing antifreeze sticker on left side of radiator
          Interesting mix of hose clamps
Oil fill cap - chrome OK, but a bowtie?
Temp sensor wire connetion at unit
Missing temp sensor wire routing clips on valve covers
Slotted valve cover screws? Should be Phillips head
RH exh manifold (replacement also has no hot air hole needed IF...
LH manifold shows no small bumps along the top as with originals
Wonder if this might be a 2" exhast set up.
Accel return spring bracket missing - hooked to X-tank strap
Oil drain plug on side, not center - wrong pan
          Missing exhaust pipe cross over
Rear shocks - are those air shocks??
Distributor shield has a wing nut - not right
Don't believe the fan clutch is right - looks like straight fins, not curved
Something don't look right on the fan blade - should be 5 rivets/blade
          Missing door auxillary weather strips
          Incorrect wiper blades
Can't tell from the picture if the arms are right or not
Picture is poor, but looks like a replacement interior mirror.

It does little good to ask the seller quetions along these lines because they just want a sale. Too bad the 31 bidders don't do some more homework. I'm with Mike - A big misrepresentation of the words SURVIVOR and ORIGINAL.

Yes, we are big boys and girls but it is so much fun to ask to question knowing the answer.

Great job, Dick! Can anyone come up with other "non-survivor" items?

                Re: 62 ebay "unrestored survivor"

I still need my TIM&JG in front of me, and it's at home, but:

-No blackout on underside of hood
                -No generator capacitor
-Black doohickey mounted inboard of passenger-side hood latch- ???
-Orange overspray on the accelerator linkage
-Excess molding flash on visors- repos?
                -Hardtop latches touching/indenting the headliner
-Power top switch on the dash, is the trunk divider panel correct?(isn't there supposed to be some bulge? I'm not sure)
-silver trunk emblem (could just be really faded)
-Aren't rear suspension straps supposed to be natural color?
Oil pan drain bolt off to the left...

At least it has nice original cracks in the steering wheel.

PS- how in the heck can you tell that's a 53-61 jack? I can't see coarse threads from here.....

                  Re: 62 ebay "unrestored survivor"

53-61 jack has cast base--62 is stamped and slightly differently configured. Good job, by the way!
                  Quite a survivor, isn't it?

Have not checked this baby out, but...

...95% Positive Rating with 18 transactions really tells you more than you ever want to know about the seller - or the car.

How about the blue spin-on oil filter?

                        - electrical tape holding the two heater hoses in front of the generator
                        - clear coat on the exhaust manifolds
                        - brake and gas pedals far too unused to have 92,000 miles
                        - missing and (maybe) wrong screws on pass door panel
                        - missing screws and groummets on dr door panel
                        - terrific routing of antenna wire in trunk
                        - crankcase draft tube in wrong location?
                        - right rear brake line out of clip on frame above axle
                        - neat ground wires to the dr side valve cover bolt
                        - loose wires by dr side rebound strap

                          And the orange aluminum intake?

Don't know if someone else picked that up.

                            Re:unrestored

Everyone has to agree it is unrestored. Survivor is a generic enough word implying the 40+ year old car is still on the road. This is classic advertising where suggestive implications accumulate to create an impression.
Like political campaigns were all familiar with.
