C2 L79 rear lower shock mount

I have a question regarding the rear lower shock mounts om a '67 L79. Below are two links to pictures I jusy snapped. On the LH side, there is ~3/4" space between the shock and the outboard shock mount stop. On the RH side, it fits nicely against the outboard shock mount stop. I also noticed that the on the LH side the original shoulder nut is flush with the end of the threaded shock mount but on the RH side, I see ~1/4" of thread showing. Is this correct? I haven't torn it apart yet but thought I would ask beforehand.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Mike-----

I trhink you have your description of the sides reversed. In any event, the shock mount with the large space between the shock grommet and the "seat" is wrong. The shock is not mounted correctly here. I'd remove it and determine what the problem is.

      Mike,

The rubber grommet shock mount should fit up against the shock mount stop and be secured on the inside with a special, cupped shaped retainer, lock washer and very "tall" nut(about 3/4"). That will leave just a few threads showing, if any.

        Thanks Joe and Rob,

I will take it apart today and see what is going on. Possibly, what I am seeing on the LH side is the center bushing from the shock separated from the rubber.

Here's a picture of the hardware that is on both lower shock mounts.

OK, I took off the LH shock. It appears that someone has put on a piece of pipe over the original mount stud and it is too long to allow for full engagement of the attaching nut on the shock. Can anyone figure why someone would do this?

          Picture is below.

          Thanks,

          Mike

            Mike -

Bubba has been there - the hardware in the photo (nut and washer) is foreign, and there shouldn't be the piece of pipe over the stud. The shocks are secured with a cup-shaped washer (with the large end facing inboard), a lock washer, and an extra-long nut.

              Mike------

I suspect that the addition of the pipe is someone's idea of a "repair" to the shock mount. If you can remove the pipe you may find out what sort of situation that they were trying to repair.

                Thanks Guys,

I am going to try to get the piece of pipe off tonight and will update you on what I find.

Re: C2 L79 rear lower shock mount

I removed the piece of pipe and found nothing wrong with the shock mount stud. Apparently Bubba had put it there to take up a little slop in the rubber bushing. It was way too long so it solved the diametral slop in the rubber bushing but added a hell of a lot of end play between the washer and nut and the shock.

Time to fix this thing correct now.

Thanks as usual for all the help.
