C-2 Paint on Wires

The horn and headlight wires in the front of my '66 have paint on them. Does anyone have any experience with removing paint from these wires without harming the insulation?

Generally a little lacquer thinner can be used successfully without damage to the wires.

If the thinner doesn't get it, I've used paint striper on an artist brush. Wipe it off pretty quick to avoid any damage. Make sure you don't get it on your paint!

I've used laquer thinner with good results. You can also use paint remover, but use it as you would the laquer thinner, that is, wiping the wires with it rather than letting it sit for any period of time. Some paint removers will eat the plastic connectors.

Dave,

Your other alternative, although more involved, is to replace the plastic wrap with new. Eastwood (and others) sell what looks like black plastic electrical tape, however there is no adhesive. I've restored many original harnesses using this method with great results.

Thanks Mark. Hope I don't have to go to that point yet. Will try the solvents first, starting with laquer thinner on a rag. Thanks to all who replied.
