transmission /steering column lock 70-72

how does the cable lock work on these cars, as mine is not hooked up. does it lock it in a gear?

When shifted into reverse, the column is locked if the key is off.

so it is locked in reverse, an you can not put it in any gear until you trun the on?

Actusally the steering column is what locks, when the shifter is place into reverse, and I think that allows the key to be removed. I think the owners manual covers the way it operates.

Key won't come out of the ignition until the trans is shifted into reverse + the steering column will be locked into position and trans will be locked into reverse until the ignition key is re-inserted. The operation of the theft deterrent system is covered in your copy of the NCRS 1968-72 Corvette Operations Manual & PV Test Guide....
