    Usage for #3952661 Converter Cover

What is the difference between the C3 #3952661 torque converter/flywheel cover and the replacing part #342467? Is there a correct application for each, and is there anything that would cause a loss of judging points if you use the wrong one?

    Thanks,

    Larry #24649

    Larry-----

The GM #3952661 was the underpan used with all 1970-74 Corvettes with THM-400. The GM #342467 replaced it, for SERVICE, in December, 1983. However, the 342467 "co-existed" with the 3952661 for several years prior to that time and was used for truck and other Chevrolet cars.

The GM #3952661 and the GM #342467 are VERY similar. The differences are VERY subtle, and I doubt that anyone could discern them while the underpans are mounted on the car. I can't really describe them to you and, for all practical purposes, it's really a moot point. However, there is one possibly discernable difference. Many examples of the GM #342467 have the manufacturer's identification prominently embossed on the bottom of the underpan in the form of "Fabco" "Made in Canada". As far as I know, that embossment was not present on the GM #3952661 underpans.

Trivia - Fabco is still in business in Canada - they manufacture the Viper space-frame

Joe, Thanks for the info on the converter cover usage. The words "Fabco" "Made in Canada" are stamped in the bottom of the #3952661 pan, or at least they are on the NOS example that I have. It sounds like there is nothing that would be noticeable enough to cause a loss of points when using the #342467 in place of the #3952661.
