Best reproduction redline tires for 1967?

    Hello All:

I'm about to purchase a set of reproduction redline tires for my '67. Previous posts have suggested that the most accurate reproduction redline for 1967 is the "Goodyear Power Cushion" made by Kelsey Tire.

Before I place an order, I'd like to get confirmation that this is the tire to get. My goal is to get all my points (except for the 3 point DOT deduction) on the reproduction tires I buy.

The Goodyear Power Cushions are a whitewall tire made specifically for 66 and 67 corvettes. The same tire (Power Cushion)was made for other vehicles but were not the same exact size as the for the Corvette. Kelsy tires make a very nice whitewall and recieved the proper deduction for the DOT mark on my 67. Check with the owner to determine the prpoper red line. I would make sure that you can come up with some documentation on the red line before putting them on your car. I have an extra set of redline (Firestones) that I took off my car because I have a piece of the tank sticker that showed whitewalls. They were just so much more common and no one would question them other than the DOT. If you just like the looks I would suggest having two sets-- one for show and one for driving... I don't get mine out much so I only will ever need the Power Cushions.

Re: Best reproduction redline tires for 1967?

          Hi Keith:

The 1967 TIM&JG says there were three redline tires used in 1967: Firestone Super Sports, Uniroyal High Performance, and Goodyear Power Cushion (the manual says there were also whitewall and blackwall Goodyear Power Cushion tires). A previous post on this Board said that the current reproduction Firestone redline is a Firestone Deluxe Champion, which is apparently not correct for 1967 redlines.

The Kelsey Tire reproduction redline is a Goodyear Power Cushion. This kind of subtle distinction is why I decided to ask other Board participants before I buy a set of reproduction redlines. I'm still hoping that someone can confirm that the Kelsey reproductions (or some other brand) will get the maximum allowable points.

And yes, I like the look of the redlines, so that is what I want to put on the car for judging. Aside from factory paperwork (I have none), I believe the only evidence regarding whether redlines were factory installed on the car is the length of the bolts on the tire carrier (redlines used longer bolts because the tires were wider).

I recieved the standard deduction last year in Windsor at the National Convention for the Whitewall power cushion. I would assume that at that level someone would have knocked me if they weren't correct (they hit me for an upside down washer for a point) I am sure that the red line would be the same if produced by Kelsey. Call the owner he is extremely knowledgable.

Hi Joe and Keith. Like Joe, I wanted red lines for my '67 too, then we dropped my gas tank and I found enough of the tank sticker that showed white walls, so I'm going with the white walls, even though I love the look of the red walls.

              Oh well...

                Keith:

I believe that you are referring to my posts. Firestone "Super Sports" are no longer produced, so the Firestone redlines are being reproduced as "Deluxe Champions", which is an improper BRAND (see standard deduction tables). As previously alluded to, the red/gold line Goodyear "Power Cushions" for Corvettes have approximately 1/2" more treadwidth than the Corvette whitewalls, and all other non Corvette applications (thus, the different tire tub bolt length for gold/redline tires). I am not sure about the Uniroyals, but can say that the Goodyears are 100 per cent correct, except for the DOT markings...............which is as good as you will get from a reproduction tire.
Joe Kelsey would possibly be willing to answer any other intelligent questions. The "documentation" issue is completely separate, and depends strictly on the indigestion level of your judges.

                    Tom:

Well, good find! This is a brand new press release dated April 2005, and news to me. It remains to be seen just how good these tires will judge. The Kelsey Goodyears have been around for a long time, and judge very well. They also sell for a lot less than the $175.00 price of the Firestone SS. Time will tell.
