    1967 versus 1968 Steering Columns

    Hello!

After having what I considered to be my "spare" standard late 1967 steering column apart for about one year I have attempted to reassemble & run into several difficulties:

    * The 1967/8 columns differ in the steering wheel hub. Are there any other differences? (specifically the column housing length, size of the plastic "spacer nut" on the shaft)

Unfortunately when I purchased my car it had what I now think was a "mongrel" column installed. I replaced the 1968 steering hub with a correct 1967 piece. However now in comparison with my correct 1967 column the housing seems to be about 2" longer and the spacer nut about 1" longer. Are these production variances (!) or did the specifications (and steering shaft length) change betweeen the years?

Would anyone have reccomendations on who I could possibly call with measurements on my current pieces to compare? - I don't want to "make" this even more of a mis-built column. I could remove the column already in the car but this seems drastic...

    Thanks!

    Carl

Carl, I have an early 68 and mid build 67 but they are not very accessable till spring. I think if I remember correctly the 68 and possibily the later 67 column style are crush type column tubes. I will try this week end to get you some measurements as installed in the car relative to it's mounting. Would that help? I never had them both out together to compare. You question appeared very interesting since the two columns are so similar.

I own a late 67 (113th from last 67 built) that had a bad upper bearing. Tom Reina from Corvette Steering Service Inc. was helpful in that he had an original refurbished bearing assembly and gave me the measurements to assemble the column. This was about 2 years ago. At that time they were located at 2215 Mullinax Dr., Anderson, S.C. 29625. Phone: 864-287-9990.
