    Fun time at Auto Zone

I seem to never learn. Each time I head to the local parts place I meet another idiot who can't do anything without consulting the computer. Before I could purchase an Optima battery I had to tell what car this was going in. The real question that she wanted to know was if it was a two barrel or four barrel carb. Now I know a two barrel carb would be very rare and I foolishly offered that such wasn't possible in a 66 Corvette. My mistake! Of course it was because the computer screen asked that question. I then asked to simply move on because fuel flow rate didn't seem to have a lot to do with my decision to put in a new battery. I was given a scowl, but we moved on and I eventually was able to leave the store, but I'm sure there were many more questions that I really was supposed to have answered. There-I feel much beter now that I have ranted some .

          Bill,

When I used to go to Autozone for parts for my '67 big block, their computer said there was no 427 made in '67, and had to look up my parts under '66...

The real sad thing is that during the past ten or so years the local auto parts stores have closed and we're left with Auto Zone. For me the good news is that I live close to DocReuild's warehouse but that doesn't help me with my Jeep.

I was at AutoZone and had to run through make and model is the only way we can find your part. Their computer listed fuel injected or carb for 1965- which the guy behind the counter quickly said "that can't be right- they didn't have fuel injection back then."

              I didn't say a word....

Re: Fun time at Auto Zone - try a 302

In the race car, I had an assortment of engines, but near the end, I had a 302 (5.0 L limit in class).

You should see trying to get plugs or gaskets or other common small block stuff.

AZ: What's the year, make and model?
Me: 1966 Chevrolet Corvette (so far so good)
                AZ: Engine? 327, 427?
                Me: 302
AZ: Can't be, you can only have a 327 or 427.
(guess they never heard of engine swaps, or when they did:
AZ: You put a Mustang engine in a Corvette?)

Or when I would simply go in and want a set of AC 43 plugs:
                AZ: What is the engine?
                Me: 302 Chevy.
AZ: Impossible, Chevy didn't make one, that's a Ford engine.

I started working behind the parts counter when I was in school (swept the floors to begin with). I have watched the quality of the counter personel deteriorate over the years. They mostly do not care about anything but their paycheck. You are right, they know nothing but what the computer tells them. I was in a bind one day and needed a battery. I went in and told them I needed a group 31 battery. They had to know what it fit before they could get me one. They did not understand battery groups (or much of anything else). I finally went to the rack and got my battery. "Are you sure that will fit? It is awfully big."

I am fortunate here that the local Carquest has a very competent staff. NAPA is also pretty good. Carquest, I will go behind the counter and log on the computer and look up my own parts. They appreciate me doing that when they are busy. I do not go to the Autozone type stores unless that I am buying wax or motor oil.

Would you care for some cashews with your battery?

Between the foodstuffs and drink coolers you can almost forget your in an autoparts store. It seems everyone is selling something to eat or drink these days.

An experienced parts counterman used to be a trade in itself. Now you are more likely to find a retailing jockey more attuned to setting up a strategic isle display for an aftersale food item.

Good part's countermen have almost gone the way of the good mechanic. most of them don't care, the rest don't know, and if they did they have no one to show them. Part's catalog , what's that? If it ain't in the computer they don't have it.By the way since Discount sold out they are just as bad.At least they used to have catalog's hanging in the isle's so you could look up your own part's. Not any more.

Re: Would you care for some cashews with your batt

One day while waiting in line at Discount Auto (now absorbed by Advnaced Auto Parts), I noticed the rebuilt shortblock sitting on display. The pistons read from #1 to #7: .040, .030, .040, .060 and on the other side they were #2 to #8: .040, .040, .060, .040.

Is that a quality-built engine or what?
