    70 console info

When I take out my gauge bezel, I want to replace the damaged shift console. I'm sure it was damaged in an attempted to remove it without knowing exactly how.

Someone once showed me a very detailed explanation of the procedure to remove/install the shift console on a 70. Seemed to cover all the little maneuvers most manuals assume you can contort your arms and elongate your fingers to accomplish.

Of course now that I have a need for the information I can't remember the source. Any suggestions on obtaining detailed info on this subject? Thanks,Dennis

    Re: 70 console info

I did it sometime ago, so I remember most of details (hope so...) First I removed shift bezel in my manual 70 (no big deal, 4 screws). The big problem was the heater control which is attached to a bracket, and this one attaches to the console. I removed screws and with care I was able to move and rotate assembly to disconnect vacuum hoses on left and some wires. This is the more difficult part. Patience, some beers, cokes. Console is fixed with to little screws/bolts at front below the radio position, you will need curved wrench or special fingers. If radio/gauge console is out you did it. There are side screws front and back. Don't forget in a 70 the fiber optic lenses at front of console, another little problem. Hope this helps a little, this is a general explanation. All my best from Argentina, Roberto, NCRS #30019, RMC

Re: 70 console info, forgot something...

Before removing bracket and heater control you need to release the side vent cables which uses a metal retainer, in each side of the control. Only for no AC cars. Sorry, Roberto

        Dennis,

I believe it was me that responded to your request a month or two ago. Because center console and gauge cluster removal is such a detailed and lengthy process, I've responded directly to your e-mail address instead of burning up server space.

If anyone else is interested, please let me know and I'll forward a copy to you!

        Thanks! Wendell Allen #32946
