Vapor Locked in Sonora, CA

Who was it from LA who stalled and vapor locked his gorgeous red 62 340Hp fuelie on the main drag in Sonora, CA this afternoon.

I thought I had the only older Corvette (a 67) in Sonora. This red corvette with an NCRS sticker created quite a stir in this small town. It was not that he stalled in an intersection, it was all the onlookers with the thumbs up that caused a traffic jam. The owner kept claiming that he needed 100 octane to run his beauty, but there is nothing over 91 to be found in Sonora.

He finally took his wife's advice and put some ice on the manifold. Once he got it going, the City Engineer put out an all points bulletin to the PD to see to a safe exit of this Corvette from the city, (mainly because the City Master Mechanic also wanted to get a look at this jewel).

I hope you got home OK. Had it been a more serious problem, we would have put it up in the City Shop or at my place. Thanks for the look, and I hope you return to Sonora. I'll try to stock some 100 proof.

Hello, Jerry,

Sonora is a great little town. My wife and I visit every couple of months; we have longtime friends up there (Walt & Bonnie Harris) and we always have lunch at the Diamondback Grill (great hamburgers). We hope to have our 63 convertible back together and on the road within the next year or so, and we hope to take it on many road trips to Sonora.

PS Are there any car shows or events that you know of going on during the summer up there?

Funny, I lunch at the Diamondback nearly every day and and was going there yesterday when I found this vapor locked 62 stalled in an intersection.

We do occasionally have road trips of various car clubs come through this little historic gold mining town, although we are a little out of the way transportation-wise for regional events. We just had a big Harley event here which ended up in the Fairgrounds in Sonora. There is a yearly general antique car show at the Ironstone Vineyards about 30 minutes away which I think the Northern California Chapter supports.

Sonora would be a great place for a road trip stop, and for Northern California events. It is the only city in a county of about 600 square miles, which includes Yosemite National Park and other national forest lands (about 80%).
We even have a Casino in the county, and the County is mainly tourist oriented, lots of foothill country roads.
