My '72 M21 has developed a small leak coming from the idler shaft hole in the front of the main case. I had this trans apart a couple of years ago, and the shaft had nice tight "press" when reinstalled. Why would it leak now? Can I use silicone to stop the leak? Any ideas? Thanks, G.

If you are sure that is where it is coming from, about the only "fix" is a "bore and bush" available from a number of Trans shops.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: M 21 leak---Help
George, I have had my T-10 rebuilt from my 62 and the reputable shop put a very small amount of silicone on the idler shaft bore at the front of the case. I have removed the trany several times recently for clutch problems and removed the old silicone and replaced with a small amount of Permatex blue. I haven't had any leaks, but make sure you don't put too much on this area because it needs to fit flush with the face of the bellhousing.- Top

Re: M 21 leak---Help
Ron, I'm glad that just silicon worked for you, it rarely does. Personally I can't belive they all don't leak to some extent from there. I think all mine always have. For some people pulling a trans out and sending the case away for rebush is a pretty big deal, plus my opinion is that it is not a good design anyway. I have heard of some rebuilders cutting an O ring groove in that area. So I developed what I'm sure many call a bubba fix. I use it all my installations now as a rule and have for many years and it does work well. My current '65 needs this. I simply cut out a gasket in the shape of the front of the trans in including ears and all. Install it between the the trans and the bell housing. You will see that the surface of the bellhousing is blank against the trans counter shaft hole. A perfect sealing surface for the gasket. Use a small 'dollop' of Permatex black silicone at the pin area for good measure.
You must use a full gasket to maintain trans alignment.
Those that I have passed this "repair" onto also use it with great success.- Top

Re: M 21 leak---Help
Frank, I'll do that. I'm thinking that the worst case senerio would be a continued slow leak that the gasket material would absorb until total saturation occured. So it might be some time till any leak evidence shows up. G.- Top
