    C-3 1970 distributor

According to my mechanic, the distributor on my 1970 LT-1 has a bad magnetic pickup assembly. My car has 30,000 original miles and the distributor appears to be original (almost everything else on the car is original). My questions are as follows: 1)Is there a way to repair or replace the part my mechanic says is faulty? 2)Where might I find this type of parts/service? 3)Should I consider a "modern" distributor to replace the original one? 4)Would a "modern" distributor result in a point reduction or is there a product that would pass NCRS scrutiny and also offer modern performance and technology?
Of course my preference is to keep the car all original. I am, however, willing to consider other options that do not compromise the car when judged. Thank you in advance for any and all advice.

    Is the engine inoperative?

I have to assume that the part you are talking about is the "pickup coil". It has eight poles and a winding and is secured to the dist. housing. When the poles on the rotating pole piece pass across the stationary poles (eight each) a voltage is generated in the coil, and this is the timing pulse to open the main power transistor, which fires the coil.

It's not uncommon for the wires leading from the pickup coil to break - they are continuously flexed by the vacuum advance as it rotates the base plate back and forth. You can check for continutity. and the CSM has a specific resistance range. I recall it's something in the range of 300-500 ohms, but check your CSM.

Not sure if this part is commonly available, but it probably is from the various Corvette parts vendors, but the first source you should try is TI Specialties - Dave Fiedler.

Charles try www.trispeciality.com for your part. Question, when was the last time your distributor was removed and the lubricant in the top of the distributor replaced? The tach drive is another service area that is not listed in the owners manual or the Corvette service manual, it needs lubrication also so the gear is not destroyed as well as the shaft. The mentioned site has very good information on distributor rebuild/maint.
