    '67 L-79 harmonic balancer part #.....

Anyone happen to have the part # available? It's the one for a 327/350 with the 12 "cooling fins" on the inside. I assume the GM part # was cast onto it. I've checked the AIM, the archives and the '67 Judging Manual, but no dice. Thanks in advance. PT

    Patrick,

The 8" balancer that would be correct for your 350 HP 67 is part number 3817173. It's still available from GM but, unfortunately, the design was changed years ago and the change deleted the fins. I believe the correct appearing balancer is now being reproduced but I don't know if it's accurate. Originals would have had the "3817173" cast into the front of the center hub.

Thanks Michael, yes GM Parts Direct has #3817173 available for $109.78 but with no internal fins. Should function OK though, I don't think you can see the fins anyway. The only thing I don't like is that they have "MALL" debossed on the front of the balancer, which probably wouldn't fly with the Judges. PT

That signifies a "malleable iron" casting.

          Patrick-----

Fill the area with JB Weld and sand it smooth and flush (or, almost flush, as necessary to ensure the obliteration of the lettering). The JB Weld is light; it won't significantly affect balance. After painting, no one will know the difference. By the way, the "MALL" denotes "malleable iron", the material that the balancer ring is cast of.

The current GM balancer is 100% functional and will SERVICE the 62-68 SHP small block applications perfectly. The "fins" in the original balancer rear hub were some sort of reinforcment. Their configuration would not support any "cooling" function and there would be no purpose for any cooling function, anyway.

The reproduction 3817173 balancer costs about $350. I really don't think that the differences in configuration justify spending that much more.

            Patrick,

I'm not 100% sure but if you use a pulley on your Corvette, and you will need one for cooling, alternator, fan etc. the pulley will cover the part number and you or no judge will be able to see it. They can see and feel you have no fins but don't worry about the JB Weld on the Balancer.

            Regards,

            JR

Thanks for the info guys! I think the GM balancer for $190 is doable. The repro's with the fins are $350. The pulley should cover up everything. PT

Remember if you are like the rest of us with a L79 we like to turn them up every so often. So don't wast money on a used part just to get fins unless it is rebuilt. This thing at red line can be a bomb. The new parts for anything that is going to be run is the best route.
