    C2 Steering Column Paint?

    Members,
I have a question regarding the color of the '65 steering column.

On page 41 of the '65 TIM & JG, Issue 5, under Steering Column and Release, it states that the column is painted low gloss black. This is the color as seen from inside the car.

On page 132, under Standard Column, it states that "the portion of the steering column mast that is visible in the engine compartment is semi-gloss black".

Is there an explanation for the apparent contradiction, or am I missing something? Which can should I be reaching for?

As always, all information is appreciated.

    Regards,
    Gene

    Re: C2 Steering Column Paint?

There actually three painted components. Original cars have a semi-gloss column that is barely visible inside the car. More exposed with a Tele extended. The middle piece, I'll call the yoke, where the turnsignal lever fits into, is the low-gloss black. The Hub that the steering wheel is attached to is even a little flatter yet.
    Hope this helps.

      C2 Steering Column Paint?

Gene's query concerns how the steering column (shaft, collar, whatever) will be judged. I have the same question regarding the '64 TM&JG which has the same wording so I was concerned about two finishes, now Michael introduces a third. Are judges expecting to see three distinct finishes on the C2 steering column components? Are they even expecting to see two finishes? To me, semi-flat and semi-gloss are like the glass being half-full or half-empty. The TM&JG doesn't state that three finishes were originally used but I sure would like to hear how it will be judged today before putting my freshly painted column (all painted John Deere Blitz Black because to my eye it is a bit more glossy than Krylon #1613) back in my car next week. JMHO, but the "trial and error" approach on some of these restoration issues sometimes leaves a bit to be desired.
      Thanks and best regards,
      Charlie

        Re: C2 Steering Column Paint?

        Gentlemen,
Thank you both for your replies to my question. I agree that exact restorations are indeed difficult and in this case the JG doesn't seem to give a definitive answer.

In my '65, the turn signal housing and the steering wheel collar look the same. Both are what I would call low gloss black. When you compare this color to Quanta semi-gloss black, they are no where close to matching.

The latest question on my mind is, should the steering column be exactly the same color as the turn signal housing or should it have more gloss?

        Thanks again, guys.

        Regards,
        Gene
