I am cleaning up the fuel tank for muy 65 coupe and was considering coating it with a galvanized paint from Eastwood. Will this give it the correct finish? Also I was wondering about using their tank coating for the inside. Is it a good product or should I just clean it up inside and leave it natural?

Re: FUEL TANK FINISH
I used the gas tank sealer on the inside of an old Packard tank after I had it dipped. It worked perfectly and I suspect that tank was in much worse shape than yours. You just pour it in, slosh it around, and let it dry.
The stuff wasn't cheap and I often thought afterwards it's probably sold in a local parts store for alot less. Good luck.- Top

Re: FUEL TANK FINISH
I used the Eastwood paint and lost a judging point. It just doesn't look like the real thing. Also, I have heard of cases where the inside coating flakes off, which results in a real mess. If yours is not rusted inside, I would leave it along. My 2-cents.- Top

Re: FUEL TANK FINISH
Sheldon,
Other than using a sealer like David mentioned, I agree with Ken, I wouldn't put anything inside the tank that would have the possibility of flaking off. If you've ever had to clean out a tank, fuel lines, pump, filter and carb, it could be an unnecessary chore. TBarr #24014- Top

Re: FUEL TANK FINISH
Sheldon, There are Corvette jobbers out there that sell brand new tanks for $199. They are the correct style dished in ends, but no original manufacturer logo. The upper tire tub covers the logo when installed.- Top

Re: FUEL TANK FINISH
Sheldon-----
There is no way that I know of to properly restore a fuel tank exterior finish to "new" condition. You might try cleaning it with some sort of non-abrasive cleaner which will help to remove the oxide coating which inevitably forms on the galvanized or "tinned" finish material. Then, as George says, spray it with a non-gloss finish clear to preserve it for as long as possible.
As far as the "innerds" go, I definitely agree with the other responders. If your tank does not suffer from internal corrosion, don't do anything to it. 1963-74 Corvette fuel tanks are relatively easy to inspect due to the large fuel opening. If your tank did have significant internal corrosion problems, I'd say that your best bet would be to replace it with a new, reproduction tank. A fuel tank is a SAFETY related item and the reproductions are outstanding. All that you'd lose is the date code stamped on the fuel sender mounting flange. And, that can't really be seen with the spare tire carrier in place on the car. Also, if you went this route, your external finish restoration challenge would be "automatically" solved. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: FUEL TANK FINISH
I agree with the other post here, but I have restored many gas tanks on antique cars and the sealers for the inside of the tanks work very well. They need a through cleaning before application however. I usually don`t buy the advertized products though. I use a good epoxy primer and usually make at least two applications. Never have had any flaking problems.- Top

Re: FUEL TANK FINISH
Gene,
I believe that Quanta states that they will meet any advertised price on a gas tank, and the Quanta tank even comes with the official logo. Can't beat that!

Re: FUEL Tank stencil? NO
I would not expect a stencil on any 1968-1972 fuel tank. I have seen a handful, but suspect at best they might have done one per shipment, near the freight car door perhaps, for identification. Someone had to get that tank, but stencil is not Typical.

FUEL Tank stencil? YES
Terry,
My 1971 coupe #19518 had a stenciled number 407 on the right side of the tank, top half, near the forwardmost portion of that side. I have several pictues of it, and in fact re-stenciled the 407 on the replacement tank that I put back in the car.
I even just went down to the basement to verify this on the tank itself.
Hope that helps.

Re: FUEL Tank stencil? YES
Patrick,
Thanks for the heads up on this off board - I had missed your comment. I lost my cookies (sounds like a replay of the sins of my youth) last week and missed the blue bow tie on this one.
As I said above - someone has to get them. I would have expected something that looks more like a part number rather than just three numbers.
Could you bring a photo to Holland March 19th?
