    C2-Rear Spring Clamps

    Hello All,

My replacement 7-leaf rear spring for my '66 has clamps (bands) on the spring to hold it together. Can these bands just be removed?

As usual, thank you for you help and advise.

Remove the bands. No C-2 or C-3 Corvette, as delivered from the factory, had bands on the springs

      Kurt,

If your spring has the correct H-shaped polyethylene liners betweeen the leaves, then, yes, the clamps can be removed. If you don't have the correct liners, then you can still purchase them from GM (part # 3794113), but be prepared for sticker shock. GM list price is $13.67 each. GMpartsidrect.com sells them for $7.79 each, but it will cost you another $8 for shipping & handling.

If the replacement spring came from Eaton or JRS, the bands are only for shipping, and should be removed after the spring is installed.

Guys, the spring is a replacement, not sure of where it was purchased from. I do have the correct liners and the spring looks correct other than the bands.
          I'll remove the bands.

          Thank you again,
          Kurt

            John...What if

....the springs aren't from either of those companies?

              Randy -

If the leaves are the correct width and have the "H"-section liners in place, there is no need for the clamps; the width of the leaves is trapped between the attaching bolts once installed.
