    C2 Firewall Blackout

    Members,
I have questions regarding firewall blackout on my '65 AO Smith body. Spent time in the archives but did not find exact answers to my questions.

How far does the blackout continue down the firewall toward the splash shields?
How far into the transmission tunnel did the blackout continue?
Should the sloped portions of the firewall (below the vertical wall) and the transmission tunnel have undercoat sprayed over the blackout paint or should they just receive undercoat?

Is there a book or article that discusses the blackout process in great detail?

    Thanks to all who respond.

    Regards,
    Gene

    Gene -

Picture yourself leaning into the engine compartment with a spray gun in your hand, and you won't find a whole lot of blackout paint at the bottom of the slanted toe pan portion of the firewall or in the transmission tunnel. There was no undercoat/sound deadener on the firewall or in the tunnel.

      John,
Thank you for your Email reply to my question. It raises a further question.

If there is little blackout paint or undercoat below the vertical surfaces of the firewall, does that mean a lot of exposed raw fiberglass? That's what I have now. Raw glass, red oxide primer, grey primer, etc.

On the driver's side there is virtually no blackout paint around the master cylinder and plate that supports the steering column. The passenger side and area behind the wiper motor are nicely covered with original black over to about the outboard side of the ballast resistor.

I've never seen a Corvette with as much raw FG and primer, etc. showing and I've concerned that the judges will hammer it for insufficient blackout.

Thanks for any additional thoughts and answers.

      Best regards,
      Gene

Coverage varied somewhat on the slanted toe pan areas, but I'd expect to see reasonably even coverage side-to-side on the vertical areas.
