1961 shifter

I am working on a 1961 with a 4 speed and the stock shifter is very loose. I can see looking down from above that the cross shaft is very sloppy. Has anyone had luck at rebuilding a shifter or is new replacement the only thing to do? The replacement price is quite high (approx $400).

Mine was also very loose. I took it apart and replaced some of the parts that were very worn. Vette products has the individual parts. I replaced the shifter tower( the ball at the bottom was very worn $90) & the lower retainer which I think is the bent metal part that the tower ball rubs on ($17).

I also bought the main shaft for $25 that they convinced me that I needed. I found when I used their part it froze the shifter up. They refused to take it back:( If you need one let me know.

I also replaced the T return spring.

Chris,
Were you satisfied with the results of your rebuild? Do your have contact info for Vette Products? The main shaft is very loose. I don't know if it is worn or just the receiving end is worn. I will pull it tomorrow. I might need the main shaft. Please send me a private email to tvonkampen@charter.net so that I can communicate with you. I just drilled out the shifter lever and crossshaft to accept the next larger diameter pin and improved mine substantially.
