The main shaft of my power steering pump pulls out of the pump after several hard acceleration runs. The retainer clip that holds the shaft in place gets pulled off somehow. I have replaced all the alt and p/s pump brackets in case I had a misalignment problem but this did not seem to help. The car is a 69 400hp with p/s and a/c.

Re: 69 power steering pump problem
John----
If I were you, I'd try a "new" pump. The original power steering pump for your car is GM-discontinued, but high quality Delco rebuilds are available. You can purchase one as a pump-only and transfer your resevoir. The rebuilt pump sans resevoir you'll need I believe is GM #26029364.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: thanks , but
John----
You DID NOT MENTION in your original post that you had replaced your pump 3 times. You DID SAY that you had replaced alternator and p/s BRACKETS. Since you specifically stated that you replaced the BRACKETS, but you DID NOT SPECIFICALLY STATE that you had replaced the pump EVEN ONCE, LET ALONE 3 TIMES, I assumed that you had REPAIRED the pump each time by reinstalling the shaft and retainer.
As far as what's causing your problem, now that I know you've replaced the pump 3 times, I suppose that I could figure out the problem. However, I suggest that you check with your grandmother. She's apparently a better diagnostician than I am and I'm sure that she's far more knowledgeable about Corvettes. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: bravo! JOHN
John,
I have seen many reponses to peoples questions which by no means answers the original question. I could give you a hundred examples but would not want to OFFEND any fellow members. Some people even give there advice even if it is comletely WRONG!
I have seen your situation on several BB p/s a/c cars I have encountered over the years. Check to make sure the correct stud is in the first exhaust manifold spot. Most people don't know there is even supposed to be a stud here and the put a bolt instead. This bolt will then cause the lower p/s bracket to bend and therefore mis align the p/s pump. If this is not the case lets now look at the alignment of the p/s pully to the crank pulley. I doubt very much that your crank pulley could be crooked. If we have a good alignment between the crank pulley and the p/s pump pulley then there has to be a misalignment at the alternator vs p/s pulley match. Either your alt. pulley is wrong therefore pulling outward on the p/s pulley. Or the alternator is somehow mounted a bit too far forward. For instance a bent lower alterator bracket. Good luck and don't be afraid to E mail me for more help.

Sorry, Johnny. It's a BOO
Dearest Johnny,
I believe that if you take the time to look at your original post, you will note that you never actually asked WHY the pump was having a problem. You just said that it was pulling out, that you had replaced the brackets, and what car you had.
If you want these kind people from the NCRS to help you fix your problems, you really ought to be a little nicer to them in the future, especially when you aren't clear on what you've done to try and fix your car. They only want to help you make your Corvette the best little car it can be.
Take care, and come visit me soon,

A little mixed....
I can't say that I haven't felt but a little mixed about this thread. With all the experts here it would seem the wrong answers would get corrected right away. That is, unless we're letting our personalities get in the way of good information. I guess the bottom line is that someone can at least come up with an answer, and hopefully the correct one at that. I'm no NCRS official, but as a member, thank you Joe S. for answering the question. TBarr #24014- Top
