    Special Collection Car Damage

I returned last night from Bloomington/Springfield/Pheasant Run/ Mecum with a sad heart. The 62 Gulf Oil racer that I owned for 22 years (and that Vic Preisler now does a wonderful job of caring for and showing) was vandalized while in the room duing setup for the special collection/Hall of Fame. Someone ran either a razor blade or a knife down the side ost of the length of the car about 3/4 of the way up the right side, and then made sure that they also made a long cut down low enough that they damaged the blue paint in the cove as well. It was done with something other than a key, because it is so deep that you can easily catch your finger in it (in a couple of places down to the primer).
That's the first time in 20+ years that any such thing has happened at the Special Collection. And they do have pretty decent security precautions in place!
Apparently someone has a rather low self-esteem if they feel it necessary to damage someone else's property in order to feel good about themselves!
We put that paint on in 1985 after much research, color-matching, etc., and it has stood up extremely well. And of course, that paint is no longer in production!
Also, the transporters (don't know the name of the company) in backing the car out of the the carrier, damaged the exhaust system on both sides. The exhauast, per GM's input to Gulf, ran inside of each rocker panel, and obviously hung somewhat low in order to do that. They (the transporters) changed the mufflers (actually resonators, designed to comply with the letter of the law at FIA and SCCA back in 1962)from round to oval--at least on the bottom.
That car has been so many places, transported by so many people--and seen by so many people--to have two incidents of damage in less than 24 hours, hurts even though I haven't owned the car for 3 1/2 years.
    Thanks for listening!

The transport damage can be somewhat accepted as a negligent driver probably screwed up. But on the other hand there is no excuse for the deliberate destruction. The person who did this should be shot....I have NO tolerance for people who intend to damage someone else's property. NO EXCUSE. I hope they find who is responsible and through the book at them, but probably not. Sorry.

NCRS should offer a reward for arrest. I know the punishment will be weak, but if we know who it is, they can be sued to recover damages and make their life a little more miserable. I am willing to contribute toward a reward.

Transport damage can be attributed to negligence on the part of the transport driver.
There is absolutely no excuse for someone intentionally damaging your vehicle. Even if the incident was captured on security cameras and the perpetrators caught, the act itself is repulsive. I could do a lot of jail time for what I would do to someone that I caught doing this to my Corvette. I hope the person (low life scum) who did this is caught and prosecuted.

Not if I was on the Jury - you would get a reward for not wasting the tax payer's money on confinement for the scum-bag !

As I was with Mike on Thursday and saw the damage first hand, I too was shocked and angered....why an individual would do such a thing to a car like that is beyond me. It is a terrible shame....I hope that Vic can get it back looking the way it should.

I wonder how common this type of vandelism is and if it is increasing. I have had problems the last two times I entered my car at local non-NCRS shows. The first involved a group of teenage boys where one of them tore a small piece of rubber seal off while I was making a trip to the bathroom. I spotted them and came running back but they took off. I thought the guy next to me was watching the cars while I was gone but he walked away to look at other cars. The second problem was more serious when someone made a razor sharp one-inch cut in the top. It's a good thing I planned on replacing the top anyway.

I'm finished with car shows and will stick with NCRS. Bill

I am sickened to hear this. I bought Vics red 69L88 coupe and I can say that he is a gentleman in the true sense of the word. I just do not understand why someone would do such a thing.

Rich, NCRS and Bloomington are two separte organizations. Bloomington Gold is a FOR PROFIT organization. NCRS is a non profit organization owned by the members.

Unfortunately this kind of thing is going to keep happening because there are no laws in place to punish the offenders, only laws to punish the victims.

Somewhere, some clowns in high places got the crazy idea that the lives of these criminals are somehow more valuable than our cars...NOT!
These are people that serve no purpose in this world and really have no right to exist in it.

I have no problem with the death penalty for such offenses, or many similar ones.
