    71 LS5 Camshaft

Can someone tell me who might make a reproduction camshaft for my 71 LS5 365HP 454. I would like to keep it stock if possible. If none are available what else would you recomend?
    Thanks Sheldon

    Sheldon------

The Crane-manufactured GM kit which included the reproduction camshaft and lifters which was available until recently is GM-discontinued. That's too bad since it was a great value. However, you can still get a reproduction of the LS-5 cam as follows:

No such thing as "rebuilding" a cam; in the old days, a re-grind altered the base circle, unless all the lobes were built up with weld and then re-ground. Much simpler to get the Crane blueprinted replacement that's ground on a new core and properly heat-treated and the specs are identical to the original GM cam.

well what ever they call it I had one done I dont remember who done the work that was over 18 years ago, at the time I couuld not get a replacment cam. hell it could have been Lunati, comp, trw I spoke with a lot of them that had the old cam specs an they used a process to (regrind the cam) that is what I put back in my LS5. most of the cams were a little off that is why I had it reground. that was the only thing wrong in my rebuild of my LS5 was the cam was not up to spec.

Yes, an the Crane reproduction cam costs only about 100 bucks from Summit.

If you think that new cams can be "off", you should see what can happen with the "reground" used ones. Do you suppose that field camshaft regrinders have anywhere near the sort of equipment and quality control that an outfit like Crane Cams, Competition Cams, or Federal-Mogul has? I don't.
