A-6 Air Conditioning Compressors - years used

Curious as to the production life of this axial compressor. I think GM first use was in 1962, with Corvette in later 1963. But how about the end of its life, both in Corvette and other GM vehicles ?

our 64 and 74 vetes have them. also the 78 chevy pickup used them. mike

As far as Corvettes go, the axial compressor was first used for the 1963 model year. It was last used for the 1976 model year, but only partially. There was a running change during the 1976 model year and Corvette converted over to radial A/C compressors. They remianed this way until the early 90s when I think that the design changed back to some sort of axial unit with the Nipondenso compressors.

My '80 Mercedes turbo diesel came factory fresh with an A6 compressor, so the work horse had a LONG life!
