    A/C compressor clutch replacement

My 71 SB Compressor is the original one, I don't want to send the compessor out to be rebuilt if I can have the clutch rebiult / replaced. I have checked out my Chassis service manual and it does not say anything about repairing the clutch, just how to replace the whole unit. The A/C system has been working quit well and now that summer is here, I would like it to work. The problem is the clutch was slowly shredding a rubber piece that helps it to engage when turned on. The pully turns freely but to stop all the rubber from shredding futher, I removed the belt, which was in good shape. I checked the archives and found some information on seal or bearing replacement, but no clutch. Is this something I can do and are new clutches available? Rebuild kits?

    Thanks as always,

    Chasman

Just a thought, you might try this auto a/c forum:

Several tool vendors catalog the necessary tools to remove and reinstall the clutch. Not a very difficult job if you have the necessary tools. You could probably find an older GM Technician that would have the required tools and knowledge. Check around locally. The ceramic seal is still available for 12-15 clams.

Chas the clutch assembly that you want to replace can be done on the car without removing the compressor. I checked out my 64 Corvette serivce manual supplement which has a fair amount of air conditioning compressor rebuild/repair coverage.
If you have a Auto Zone store, you can get the tools needed to do this replacement yourself. The Auto Zone loan a tool mat in the store will have pictures of the tools you will need. A deposit is required to borrow the tools which is fully refundable. The clutch assembly is also available from them, they will ask you if you have the 5 inch or 5 3/4 inch clutch assembly on your Corvette and will most likely have to order it for overnight delivery.
The 64 Corvette supplement service manual states that the front seal of the compressor can be changed without removing the compressor if you discharge/recover the R12.
