Did the LT1's use a special gasket, below the carb to the intake? Is it the same as the one used on the big blocks on the Holley equipped cars?

There were some variations during the 1970-72 period. During the 70-72 period, Holley carburetors were used for big blocks only during the 1971 model year for the LS-6. The carburetor base gasket used for 1971 LT-1 and 1971 LS-6 was the same. It is a thick, insulating type gasket, originally of GM #3989390 and it had a completely open plenum. This gasket was discontinued in July, 1972 and replaced by GM #3999198, a virtually identical gasket. It was also discontinued by GM several years ago.
There are other Holley insulating base gaskets on the market, including those available from Holley, which will SERVICE the application perfectly. However, their external configuration is different than the original gasket and is EASILY discerned. "Gasketeer extraordinaire" Dr. Rebuild offers a virtually PERFECT reproduction of the original gasket. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
