I have decided to remove the spin on oil filter on my 64 and put the original cannister back on. Im installing the by pass valve and the AIM says to torque the two bolts to 39-49 lbs which seems a little tight. Has anyone crushed one of the aluminum by pass valves torquing it down or will hand tight be enough? Thanks

Don,
Probably supposed to be inch pounds, not foot pounds. Roughly 3 or 4 foot pounds.- Top

Re: Cannister Oil Filter Bypass Bolt Question
Don-----
The oil filter adapter used for 1957 through 1967 was secured to the block with 1/4-20 bolts. The GM-specified torque for these bolts is is 80 pound/INCHES.
By the way, 1968+ used 5/16-18 bolts and the torque for these was 18 pound/FEET.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
