    C1 hood help

I read that GM changed the hood for the 1960's with the "top tank" radiator. Can anyone tell me what the difference between the two is? I've compared pictures of 58 - 62 hoods and they all look they same at the front of the hood where there could be a clearance problem (except for the notch for the top rad. mount on the 61-62). Obviously I 'm not looking at the correct area. Thanks, Jim

    Re: C1 hood help

If you look at the shelf area at the front of the hood that is directly aft of where the "notch" is on 61-62 hoods, You will notice that on 58,59, and some early 60 cars, that the point at which this shelf transitions to the different elevation is further aft on the hood. If you try to use one of these hoods on a car that has an aluminum radiator support in it, the support bar that runs across the top of the radiator support will hit right on the edge of where the hood transitions to the shelf. This because the aluminum support has a forward jog in the support bar, while the copper support had a bar that ran straight across with any offset. The easy way to identify a hood is by measuring the depth of the shelf. The 60 top tank hood should be the same dimension as the 61-62 hood. The only change to the hood for 61-62, was the addition of the "notch" to clear the top clamp on the radiator starting sometime in 61. The difference is pretty subtle, and most people would never notice unless you pointed it out to them.

Jim, Here's a pic of the front area on a '58 hood. If I remember correctly my '60 had a step down about the same depth as the recesses for the hood hinges. This step down went clear across the front inner support on the hood. Hope this helps. Ted

          Ted,
A great view of an original blackout on the underside of the hood as well! Someone was looking for a pic of the blackout margins on the hood a few days ago, and I could not find a pic to post. This is a perfect pic to work off of!

Here is a link to a picture of my hood - (I hope it works). 2 questions. Which hood do I have? Does the bend at the front of the rad. support (arrow) indicate a support for a top tank radiator? It has a hole on the drivers side bottom for the radiator drain. I know you pros out there will finally solve this problem for me. Thanks, Jim

              Jim,
Based on the view of your pic, that is clearly a support for an aluminum radiator since it has the offset in the top support bar. It also appears that that is a 60 hood. If the hood clears the support bar, then it is a 60 hood for sure since the 59 hood just will not clear that bar.
