    Weisel in the Squirrel Cage

    Lyndon,

Sounds like you may have a weisel caught in your squirrel cage. If you run the blower motor and listen from the underhood side, does the noise come from the blower motor? It's common to have leaves and other misc caught in that area.

If there is something wrong with the blower motor and it's turning very slowly, I would think you would see some activity on the amp guage as you turn the motor on and off. I can't think of anything other than the motor that might cause that problem and since it's not difficult to remove, I would probably start there.

not difflcult to remove, it is tight on a BB with AC

            Lyndon,

Maybe we should back up one step and check power and ground before you remove the motor. With the ign on, the blower hot wire disconected and the blower switch on high, test for current with a test light at the power wire. Then test the ground wire to see if indeed it goes to a good ground. If both test ok, it would almost surely indicate a failed blower motor.

Lyndon since you did replace the blower motor you may have done something similiar to what I did several years ago when I replaced my blower motor. I had to replace the plastic squirrel with a new one, being careful not to do what I had done to the old one, can't really remember actually, mayby I tightened it to tight. Anyway new squirrel cage/blower fan and lots of air coming out. The old one was not spinning but the blower motor shaft was.

                What you didn't tell us...

was you're working on a 1971 A/C equipped Corvette with its unique, 1-year only, CEC emission control system. That makes its A/C system DIFFERENT from those before/after due to the addition of two relays (Anti-Diesel and Blocking) installed on the interior heater plenum directly behind the passenger side lower dash pad!

If you hear buzzing from this area of the car when you engage the A/C, then:

                (1) You've got the wrong wiring harness components in your car.
                (2) Your original wiring harness components have been 'Bubba-ized'.
                (3) Your Anti-Diesel and/or Blocking relays are 'fried'.
                (4) Your A-D/B relays are impropely installed from a grounding standpont.

In any event, my humble opinion, is the noise you're hearing is one of these relays (intended to over-ride the center console switch settings and FORCE your A6 compressor to engage on engine shut-down to thwart dieseling/run-on) going BEZERK and randomly switching itself to death...

If this doesn't make sense to you, then read the theory of operation given for your A/C system in your copy of the 1971 Chasis Service Manual + review the A/C wiring diagram for your car in Section UPC C60, Sheet E6 of your copy of the 1971 Corvette AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) and take a peek at Section UPC C60, Sheet E9 in the AIM for the physical location/installation of these relays....
