'68 Wiper Motor Malfunction and Adjustment

During that Eternal Vigil known as '68-'72 wiper door / motor maintenance, I learned another trick about servicing the wiper motor which I thought I'd share with any '68-'72 owners.

Symptom: Wipers operate fine at full speed, but when I shut them off they refuse to park. Instead they raise up ~ 1-in. on the windshield and fall down again in sort of a "mini-wiping" motion. As they cycle the wiper door also constantly raises up and down about half-way as the limit switch is repeatedly pressed and released. Shutting off the wiper switch will not stop this cycling. Neither will shutting offf the ignition. The only way to make it stop is to disconnect the battery. Upon reconnecting the battery, the vacuum solenoid is automatically energized and you can hear it click. Wipers will then operate O. K., but repeat this cycling if you try to turn them off.

Cause: Wipers continue to run and refuse to go into the "park" sequence because the pre-load on the wiper motor armature has loosened and gone out of adjustment. A properly adjusted armature produces a drag on the wiper motor that is required in order for the wipers to park.

Cure: An adjustment screw is located on the motor near the grommet behind the washer pump outlet. Looking at the motor from the front of the car, it is located at the 10 o'clock position. It is a small set screw inside a 7/16" jamb nut. All you do is loosen the nut, tighten the screw ~1/4" and re-tighten the jamb nut. You can make this adjustment without removing the wiper motor from the car. Just thought I'd pass along this tip along to those daring souls that actually drive their car in the rain!

    Thanks Russ.

Your tid bit is copied and in the "wiper section" of my ever thickening operations ring binder
