    Which Universal Joint to Choose?

Hello...Which U Joints should purchase for my 76? I am replacing the half and drive shaft joints and I want to keep originality. All the other parts are original. Then we have the debate over greasable or non-greasable.... If some one could give me the part numbers for the original spicers maybe I have a shot at finding them at NAPA. Any suggestions on sources would be of great help!!!

Spicer replacement U-joints are considerably different in appearance that originals.
FEDERAL-MOGUL #231 U-Joints are exact replacements for NON-Greasable units. They are American made and are sold under the Name PRECISION UNIVERSAL JOINT.
The last time I tried to purchase these from NAPA they had converted their inventory to Greasable only with this part number.
I found a set at ALL-PRO parts about $20 ea......Look em up on the 'net

The above mentioned U-joints are for the halfshafts. The drive shaft u-joints have a unique indentation about the size of a quarter in the center area on a '67. I don't know if they are available. Mine were ok so I reused them...

        Christopher,

I own a 64 and about 15 year ago opted to install new greasable u-joints. I wish now I would have installed the non-serviceable u-joints. I have to remove each end of the drive shaft to access the grease zerc due to how close the the drive shaft and yoke crosses fit together. It's a pain in the @#$ to grease them. Go with the spicer non-serviveable unit and be done with it.

        Best Regards,

          Thanks James....

I have done some research, and the spicer U-Joints are now designed different than the originals. I am sold on the non-servicable....now which brand will the judges accept on the 1976 L-82 M21? Could a judge please answer this question?!!!!

Happy 4th of July to everyone!

For judging the half shafts and the U-joints have 8 points for originalty. Lets say the judge decides the half shafts are 2 each and the U joints are one each as a starting point. If you use joints without grease zerts the deduction will be small 1-2. As for best I can't help. I have seen the original drive shaft joints and have seen half shaft joints with the indented center but I'm not sure they were original.

              Christopher,

I went through the same thing for my 63 vette half shaft ujoints. I purchased the heavy duty spicer lubed for life ujoints and could not get the trunion (center) of the ujoint into the yoke or flange of the halfshafts. These Spicer parts are made very well but the center part is too beafy for the corvette application. The Spicer size for 1963 to 69 corvettes is 1310 and 1350 and I think the 1310 driveshaft ujoint changed with T/H 400 transmission in 69.

In the end I purchased replacement halfshaft ujoints from a GM dealer for about $20. each and the delco # is 45U0123 and the GM # on the box is 89029305. These are lubed for life without a grease fitting and they fit into the yokes and flanges without any problems. I don't know who makes them but the Delco box says made in the USA. My local GM dealer must have thought he had GOLD because he wanted over $100. for them.
